Born to Air Commodore Suryanarayana Rao (Andhra Pradesh) on 13 August 1954. Renuka is the oldest of three daughters. She received her B.A. from the Welham Girls School, Dehradun. Bangalore University. Renuka married Sreedhar Chowdhury on 23 September 1973.

Chowdary was elected to the Rajya Sabha as a spokesperson for Congress.

She was appointed Minister of State for Tourism by the UPA I government in May 2004. From January 2006 to May 2009, she was the Union minister of state (Independent Charge), for Ministry of Women and Child Development of the UPA I government. Nama Nageswara Ro, TDP from Khammam, defeated Renuka Chowdary in the Lok Sabha elections of May 2009. Mid Day in Mumbai reported that Renuka Chowdary, responding to Sri Ram Sena’s Valentine’s Day threats, said that youth should “swarm’ pubs and make points to the “moral police brigade.” The Sri Ram Sena Chouwdary attacked a Mangalore pub in 2009 and commented that Mangalore had “talibanized”. The mayor of the town filed a case against her, accusing her both of glorifying isolated incidents as well as making generalized remarks about the city. Her younger daughter Tejaswini was the one who actually led the “Pub Bharo” campaign.

Renuka Chowdhury, born 13 August 1954, is an Indian politician. She is a member the Indian National Congress and represents the party in the Rajya Sabha of Andhra Pradesh. She was also the Union minister of state (Independent Charge), for Ministry of Women and Child Development and Tourism, in the Government of India.

Chowdhury was a member from Telugu Desam Party when she entered politics in 1984. Chowdhury was a Rajya Sabha member for two consecutive terms, and Chief Whip of Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party from 1986 to 1998. From 1997 to 1998, she was the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare in the cabinet headed by H. D. Deve Gowda. In 1998, she joined Congress party after leaving Telugu Desam Party. She was elected in 1999 and 2004 to the 13th, and 14th Lok Sabha representing Khammam. She also holds memberships on the Committee on Finance (1999-192000) and the Committee on the Empowerment of Women (202000-01).
