Rengaswamy Ramesh is one of the most popular and richest Oceanographer who was born on June 2, 1956 in Tamil Nadu, India. R. Ramesh was born in south India on June 2, 1956. He completed his graduate studies in physics (1976), and his master’s in 1978 at the University of Madras. He enrolled for doctoral studies in 1984 under Kunchithapadam Guppalan, Physical Research Laboratory (PRL). He also did post-doctoral studies at the laboratory of his mentor between 1985 and 1986. In 1987, he joined the Planetary and Geosciences Division (PRL) as a research assistant. He has been with the institution in various capacities: Scientist-Grade D (1987-1994), Reader (1994-1998), Associate Professor (1999-1998), Professor (1999-2001), Senior Professor (since 2008), and holds the position as an Outstanding Scientist (Foundation for GLocal Science Initiatives – FGSI). Between 1992-1993, he was a visiting researcher associate at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, under Devendra Lal’s guidance. He passed away on April 2, 2018, at the age 61.

Ramesh is well-known for his contributions to reconstruction studies of the paleo-climatic, paleo-oceanographic conditions in the Indian Ocean. Along with S. K. Bhattacharya, Kunchithapadam, Gopalan are credited with the establishment for the first time of a stable isotope laboratory in India. He used stable isotope methods to study tree rings, corals peat deposits, speleothems as well as lake sediments. His studies helped in expanding the knowledge about the monsoons over the past 35 years. He created equations to calculate past temperatures and rainfall, and produced high-resolution documentation of monsoon fluctuations during the Holocene. His research has been described in several peer-reviewed papers. ResearchGate and Google Scholar are two online repositories for scientific articles that list 208 and 267 respectively. Climate Change 2013:The Physical Science Basis was his book. It is a 1552-page compilation from reports of Working Group I of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Published by Cambridge University Press, it was co-authored. He mentored 15 students in their doctoral studies, who were also trained in stable isotope methodologies by him. He is the National Program on Palaeoclimate Studies of the ISRO–Geosphere Program (GBP), and he sits as an external member in the Research Council of the National Geophysical Research Institute.

Ramesh was listed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as one of those scientists who contributed to the IPCC’s reports. He was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. He was also awarded the Jagirdar-of-Arni Gold Medal, and the Professor P. E. Rengaswamy Ramesh (1956-2018), was an Indian climatologist and oceanographer. He was also a former Prof. Satish Dawan Professor at The Physical Research Laboratory and a senior faculty at the National Institute of Science Education and Research in Bhubaneswar. He was well-known for his paleo-climatic, paleo- oceanographic and other studies. The Indian National Science Academy (India) and the National Academy of Sciences, India, followed his lead in 2001 and 2002, respectively. In 2006, he was awarded the TWAS Prize. TWAS also honored him with an elected fellowship in 2007. In 2016, the Indian Space Research Organization presented him with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
