Marinus Theodoor Rene Hidding, born 5 February 1953, is an Australian politician. From 1996 to his resignation in 2019, he was a Liberal Party member representing the Division of Lyons at the Tasmanian House of Assembly. He was Leader of the Opposition in Tasmania and leader of the Liberal Party from 2002 to 2006.

Hidding was unable to defeat the Labor Party government of Paul Lennon at the 18 March 2006 state elections. The Opposition did not make any gains in terms seats despite a rise in the Liberal Party primary vote. Hidding did not speculate about whether he would remain Opposition Leader on election night. Twelve days later, Will Hodgman, who was elected the party’s new leader unanimously on March 30, the day after the final election results were announced, was elected by the party.

Hidding resigned from parliament on 25 February 2019, following allegations of historic sexual abuse against a minor, published in The Australian. Hidding denied the allegations and said he would confront them as a private citizen. In September 2019, the police announced that Hidding would not be charged over the allegations, with the Director of Public Prosecutions determining that “given the constraints posed by the passage of time and the resulting impact on the evidence available, there was no reasonable prospect of conviction”.

Hidding was elected as the Opposition leader in 1999 after the Liberals lost power. In August 2002, he was elected Leader. Hidding was Shadow Minister for Tourism and Parks and Heritage and Shadow minister for Resources and Energy.
