His mother, Ren Zhiqiang, was a Beijing municipal official. He studied at Beijing No. 35 Middle School. Ren’s parents were persecuted in the Cultural Revolution. He fled to Yan’an to serve as a sent-down child in 1968. He enlisted in People’s Liberation Army a year later. He was a military engineer in 38th Army and later became a platoon leader.

China Daily reported in 2010 that Ren, the chairman of Huayuan Real Estate Group was paid the most salary among the 258 companies that filed annual reports. According to reports, his salary was 7.07 million Yuan ($1.04 Million). In 2014, he resigned from his position as chief of the property company.

Ren Zhiqiang, Chinese: Ren Zhi Qiang, was born 8 March 1951. He is an ex-real estate tycoon from China, member of the Communist Party of China, the Beijing Municipal Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Sina Weibo blogger with over 37 million followers. He is often referred to as “Big Cannon Ren” for his harsh criticisms of the Party. After criticizing Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, over China’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, he disappeared on 12 March 2020.

Ren left the army to become deputy general manager at Beijing Yida in 1981. He was appointed as the department head at Beijing Huayuan Group Corporation in 1984. In September 1985, he was arrested and was released after 14 months. He was never convicted of any crime. His long-time friend claims that he was imprisoned because he had insulted the head of Beijing’s Xicheng District’s audit department. In 1988, Ren was elected vice president of Huayuan Corporation and in 1993, he was elected President. He was appointed Director of Bank of Beijing Co., Ltd. in 2004 and Chairman of Beijing Huayuan Property Co., Ltd. in 2007. He is a graduate of Renmin University of China’s Master of Laws program.

In 2016, he openly challenged Communist Party general secretary Xi Jinping’s view that government media should toe the Party line. After Xi made an inspection tour of CCTV on 19 February 2016 during which journalists displayed a banner reading “CCTV’s surname is the Party. We are absolutely loyal. Please inspect us”, Ren posted on Weibo: “When does the people’s government turn into the party’s government? [Are the media] funded by party membership dues? Don’t waste taxpayers’ money on things that do not provide them with services.” The tweet was subsequently deleted, but on 22 February 2016 state-affiliated media accused Ren of advocating the overthrow of the Communist Party. On 28 February, Ren’s weibo accounts were blocked by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), for “spreading illegal information”, cutting Ren off from an estimated 37 million web followers. A day later, the Xicheng District CPC Committee, where Ren’s party membership is registered, vowed to punish him under party rules. On 2 May 2016, Ren was placed on a one-year probation within party.
