Regina Doherty, a Fine Gael politician from Ireland, was born 26 January 1971 and has been Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection (since June 2017). From 2011 to 2020, she was a Teachta Da (TD) in the Meath East constituency. From 2016 to 2017, she was the Government Chief Whip.

Doherty, in January 2018, announced the start of the consultation process as part of the review of 2015’s Gender Recognition Act. This was to expand the Gender Recognition Act to include people under 18 and those who are not- binary. Doherty was a participant in the Opening Plenary Session – Listening Today for Better Social Policies Tomorrow in the OECD Canada Policy forum.

Doherty stated that she had filed a complaint to Garda Siochana in July 2017 against Catherine Kelly, a political blogger. Kelly claimed that Gardai warned her about Kelly’s social media posts and online articles which made reference to Regina Doherty. According to the Dail, a US-based academic had a “sinister experience” at an Irish airport. She was told by Gardai not to tweet or publish anything about Ms Doherty again. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar appointed her Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection on 14 June 2017. It was revealed in September 2017 that she was planning to repay an “unlawful” allowance of EUR15.800 she received as Government Chief Whip. This was contrary to the law that states “no allowance may be paid to party whips if they are Ministers or Ministers of State”.

It is understood that the British Government has agreed in principle to continue all payments, although the then Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Amber Rudd, has been unable to guarantee that the necessary legislation will be passed by 29 March 2019. Also in January 2019, Doherty was appointed director of elections for Fine Gael for the 2019 European elections.
