Upshaw is the son Sabrina Upshaw Sr. and Reggie Upshaw Sr. who both played football at Middle Tennessee State University. Reggie Upshaw, the younger, attended Baylor School in Chattanooga. He was a multi-sport athlete who won the state high jump championship as well as all-state honors as a junior in basketball and football. Upshaw was a wide receiver and tight end in football and received scholarship offers from Vanderbilt and Middle Tennessee. He broke his right foot in his last season of football and another fracture in his first basketball season. This forced him to concentrate on basketball for the future. Upshaw was a senior and averaged 22 points, 12 boards, and three blocks per game. Upshaw was a three-star recruit who attracted attention from many Division I programs. He then committed to Middle Tennessee with coach Kermit Davis.

For the 2018 NBA Summer League, Upshaw signed with the Los Angeles Clippers. He contributed 24 points, nine rebounds, two assists and a steal in an 89–74 victory over the Washington Wizards on July 11. On July 27, 2018, he signed with BC Andorra of the Spanish Liga ACB.

On July 30, 2019, he has signed with Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia of the Italian Lega Basket Serie A (LBA).

Upshaw was a senior at Middle Tennessee and averaged 14.5 points per game. Upshaw shot 1-for-10 and dished out one assist. As a junior, Upshaw averaged 13.7 point, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per contest. He had wrist surgery after the season.

After going undrafted in the 2017 NBA draft, Upshaw signed a free agent deal with the Milwaukee Bucks and played for the team in the NBA Summer League. Instead of joining their training camp in the hopes of making the regular- season roster, he agreed to a ten-month deal with Tigers Tübingen of the German Basketball Bundesliga in mid-July. Regarding the Bucks, Upshaw said, “I didn’t feel like the contract that I had with them would have been the best one for me my first year.” Upshaw averaged 14.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game as a rookie. “The amount of work I’ve put in during my first season and this summer have prepared me to take the next step in my career,” he said.
