On May 23, 1986, he signed a four-year contract, which was a transaction that was overshadowed by the acquisition of running back Herschel Walker.
Collier was chosen by the Birmingham Stallions, United States Football League in round one (third overall) during the 1983 USFL Draft. Collier injured his hip during the season opener. He was then platooned alongside Bob Lane. After 5 starts, 604 yards passing, 1 touchdown, 253 yards rushing, and 4 touchdowns, he sustained a season-ending knee injury.
