Caldwell attended Jefferson High School in Tampa where he excelled in three sports: high school football, basketball, and baseball for Jefferson Dragons. Caldwell began his career as a freshman at tailback. As a sophomore, Caldwell switched to quarterback, which was a position he hadn’t played before. He threw for 6,936 yard and seventy- seven touchdowns in three years as a starter. He threw for 2,338 yard as a junior, leading the Dragons to the Class 5A semifinal game. He was also named Florida Class 5A Player-of-the Year. He was an all-state first-team selection in 1996, and a second team selection in 1997.
Caldwell was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He played for the Chargers four seasons, 2002 through 2005. He had 22 catches for 208 yards, three touchdowns, and nine kickoff returns for an average of 24.4 yards in his rookie season. He played in nine games for the Chargers, with four starts. In 2003, he caught eight passes and gained eighty yards. On five carries, he ran for 29 yards.
Caldwell subsequently signed with the New England Patriots prior to the 2006 season. He went on to total over 60 catches and 700 yards on the season. During a playoff game against the Chargers, Caldwell had seven receptions for 80 yards, including a four-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Tom Brady in the fourth quarter. A week later in the AFC Championship game, he dropped two passes during the Patriots’ 38–34 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Caldwell was released by the Patriots four days before the first game of the 2007 season.

Donald Reche Caldwell, Jr. (/rI ‘S eI/ ; REEshay) is an American former professional and college football player. He was a wide receiver for the National Football League (NFL), for six seasons starting in 2000. Caldwell played college football at the University of Florida. He then played professionally for the San Diego Chargers (NE Patriots), and Washington Redskins (NFL).
Caldwell was awarded an athletic scholarship to the University of Florida in Gainesville. He was a letterman for Coach Steve Spurrier’s Florida Gators football program from 1998 to 2001. He was a third-team All-American junior selection by The National Sports Bureau. He was also an honorable mention All- American selection from the Football News. He was also a semi-finalist in the Fred Biletnikoff award (an annual award given to the nation’s best receiver) and a second-team All-Southeastern Conference select. His impressive junior season ended with sixty-five receptions of 1,059 yards, an average of 16.3 yards per catch, and ten touchdowns. He is the ninth Gators receiver to surpass 1,000 yards in one season. Caldwell studied leisure service management.
His 2004 season began with three touchdown receptions in the Chargers’ first five games. However, in a game against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6, Caldwell suffered a knee injury, tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), and was lost for the season. He returned to play a full season in 2005. Yet, the Chargers did not re-sign Caldwell after 2005. During his stint with the Chargers, his reputation for dropping passes earned him the nickname “Ricochet” among fans since footballs would seemingly bounce off his hands.
