White was elected as one of the Labor candidates to Lyons in the 2010 Tasmanian State Election. White’s campaign was focused on “renewal” and pointed out that David Llewellyn and Michael Polley, both sitting MPs, had been in the parliament for more than twenty years. Her advertisement used Polly Waffle wrappers as her advertising, with “Pollywaffle”, a demeaning nickname for Polley. White narrowly defeated Llewellyn to win the second Labor seat. Heather Butler, the third sitting MP was also defeated.

At a party meeting on 17 March 2017, Bryan Green resigned as Tasmanian Labor leader. White was elected leader unopposed, and hence Leader of the Opposition.
