Fair Copy is Hazelton’s engagement with Emily Dickinson’s poetry. She uses the first lines from Dickinson poems to acrostic, which Hazelton then used to write her own poems. (The project was started on Hazelton’s 29th birthday. It used every 29th poem in The Complete Works of Emily Dickinson. Christina Pugh, reviewing the collection in The Emily Dickinson Journal said that Hazelton’s handling of line was often astonishingly virtuosic and that her material is only “personal” in the coyest, most mercurial ways. These qualities are reminiscent of Dickinson’s own work.
