She was appointed as the Special Assistant to the Principal Deputy in the Administration for Community Living, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

In 2015, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the National Disability Mentoring Coalition inducted Cokley into the inaugural Susan M. Daniels Disability Mentoring Hall of Fame. She was also a recipient of the Frank Harkin Memorial Award by the National Council on Independent Living. Cokley was named the 2020 Richman Distinguished Fellow in Public Life by Brandeis University.

Cokley joined the Center for American Progress in July 2018, becoming the first director of the organization’s Disability Justice Initiative. Senator Tammy Duckworth, who is also disabled, was a featured speaker at the inaugural event.

Cokley started her career at the Institute for Educational Leadership, where she spent five years developing tools and resources that would empower and educate young people with disabilities. Cokley was a participant in the Education Policy Fellowship Program 2006.
