Rebecca Belmore is one of the most popular and richest Artist who was born on March 22, 1960 in Uppsala, Uppland, Sweden. Belmore was born in Upsala (Ontario), Canada on March 22, 1960. Belmore lived in Northwestern Ontario until she was 16 years old, with her grandparents. Her grandmother taught Belmore how to harvest native foods from the land during these summers. Jessica Bradley, author describes Belmore’s difficult adolescence due to the “the custom ingrained by the [Canadian] government assimilation. She was sent to Thunder Bay high school and billeted at a non-Native family.” Bradley says that her experiences as an adolescent have made notions of cultural loss and displacement “reformed into acts of reparation or objects of protest [within her diverse works].” In 1988, Belmore attended the Ontario College of Art and Design. She was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2005 for her achievements at the Venice Biennale.
Rebecca Belmore has shown work in biennial exhibits throughout her career. In 1998, she was part of the exhibition Every Day. In 2006, her work was included in the exhibition Zones of Contact. Her 2005 work Fountain was displayed at the Canadian Pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale. She was the first Aboriginal artist to ever represent Canada at this event. She also exhibited in Sweet Taboos at 3rd Tirana Biennale Tirana, Albania, the same year. She exhibited at the IV Bienal de la Habana in Havana, Cuba, 1991.
Belmore has been awarded membership in the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In 2004, Belmore completed a residency with MAWA (Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art) in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She is also a Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts (2013), as well as the recipient of the 2016 Gershon Iskowitz Prize.
She was the first Indigenous woman representing Canada at the Venice Biennale in 2005. She also received Canadian Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2013.
Belmore’s interactive installation Mawache-hitoowin – A Gathering of People For Any Purpose (1992) featured a circle of kitchen chairs and other kitchen chairs belonging to Belmore, which were arranged in a circular arrangement. Each chair was equipped with a pair headphones. Each chair had a pair of headphones that could be used to listen to the stories, which were told by the speakers. This work was created for an exhibit of Indigenous art to commemorate the 500th anniversary Columbus’s arrival in Hispanola. It used Indigenous storytelling traditions and passed on wisdom from elders to counter Native victimization and stereotypes.

Belmore has had two major solo touring exhibitions, The Named and the Unnamed, a multi-part installation that commemorates women missing from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, Vancouver (2002); and 33 Pieces, Blackwood Gallery, University of Toronto at Mississauga (2001). In 2008, the Vancouver Art Gallery hosted Rising to the Occasion, a mid-career survey of Belmore’s artistic production. In 2014, Belmore was commissioned to create an original work for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights The work consists of a blanket of hand pressed clay beads, engaging the community in Winnipeg to help produce them.
