Ratu Atut Chosiyah is one of the most popular and richest Socialite who was born on May 16, 1962 in Comas District, Lima, Peru. The fact that the Banten administration has a history of corruption makes allegations about it more sensitive. Some parts of the Banten region have long suffered from severe local poverty. High levels of poverty are a hallmark of areas near Serang, the provincial capital. The Lebak region’s high levels of poverty and failure to implement government policies caused a worldwide furore in 1861 when Multatuli published Max Havelaar, a controversial novel. Max Havelaar’s main setting is the Lebak area, where Max Havelaar (a young Dutch colonial official) is shown fighting against corrupt Dutch government systems.

At the time Ratu Atut’s reelection was in 2011, it was reported that her husband, Hikmat, Tomet was a member Golkar in Indonesian People’s Representative Council. Her younger sister Ratu Tatu Chasanah was the deputy head of Serang Regency, Banten. Tb Haerul Nurjaman was deputy mayor of Serang. In late 2012 Ratu Atut’s brother-in-law, Aden Abdul Khalik, unsuccessfully ran for the position of head (bupati) of the Tangerang Regency in Banten province. Aden was supported in his bid by a range of small political parties including the United Development Party (PPP), the Indonesian Nahdlatul Ulama Party (PNUI), the Concern for the Nation’s Function Party (PKPB) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) but not by the major Golkar party which both he and Ratu Atut belonged to at the time.

Ratu Atut stood for election again in the 2011 provincial elections with Rano Karno as her running mate for deputy governor. She was supported by two of the largest political parties in Indonesia, Golkar and the PDI-P (Partai Demokrat Indonesia-Perjuangan), and won the election comfortably with 49.6% of the vote. Initially, the vote was challenged by the losing candidates. However, in November 2011 the Constitutional Court rejected the challenges clearing the way for Ratu Atut to become governor of Banten for a second time. She was sworn into office for a five-year term 2012–2017 by minister of the interior Gamawan Fauzi on 11 January 2012.

She was the caretaker governor and responsible for the preparations of the 2006 provincial elections. She chose to nominate Mohammad Masduki, and she selected him as her running mate for the slot of deputy governor (wakil giganur). She won the November 26, 2006 election and was elected governor for the 2006-2011 period. On January 11, 2007, she was sworn in as governor with Mohammad Masduki (her deputy governor) by Muhammad Ma’ruf, the minister of interior.

Ratu Atut Chosiyah, born Ciomas Serang, Banten (16 May 1962), is an ex- governor of the province Banten in Indonesia. In 2014, she was removed from office due to a corruption case. She served several terms in office. She was Djoko Munandar’s deputy governor from January 11, 2002 until her election in 2006. Djoko was implicated in a corruption case, and she was removed from office in October 2005. Ratu Atut was appointed acting governor by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to assume Djoko’s administrative duties. She later became governor. Thus, she became the first woman governor of Indonesia. The Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission in May 2014 formally accused her of allegedly corrupt acts. She was sentenced to four years imprisonment in September 2014 for the corruption charges she faced.

Atut was the first woman to be elected deputy governor under Djoko Munandar’s governorship in 2002. Djoko Munandar was convicted of corruption in 2005. Atut was elected acting governor, until Djoko’s term expired in January 2007.

In early January 2014, the KPK widened investigations into Atut’s family dealings in Banten. The KPK decided to charge Ratu Atut with extortion in connection with charges that she attempted to bribe former chief justice of the Constitutional Court, Akil Mochtar, and it was announced that her brother, Tubagus Chaeri “Wawan” Wardana, would be charged with money laundering over his alleged involvement in a medical procurement program in Banten. She was subsequently formally detained by the KPK. Anti-corruption groups subsequently demanded that Atut be given a severe sentence.
