Childress was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the first round (19th overall) of the 1995 NBA Draft. Childress averaged 2.4 points per match in his two NBA seasons with the Pistons as well as the Portland Trail Blazers. His NBA career was cut short due to a torn ACL, and disputes with Trail Blazers coach P. J. Carlesimo.

Childress was able to score 37 points with 7 assists against a UNC team that included Jerry Stackhouse, Rasheed Wallace and hit a game-winning shot with 4 seconds remaining in overtime. Childress’s crossover dribble with UNC’s Jeff McInnis was the highlight of the game. McInnis fell and Childress moved with his hand as though to say “come here” or “get up.” Childress then scored a 3-pointer. In 1995, he was named the ACC Male Athlete Of The Year. Childress was honored with the ACC 50th Anniversary men’s basketball team in 2002. This honors the fifty most important players in ACC history.
