Ramon Tremosa was conceived in Barcelona on the 30th June, in a family originally from Lleida. His father is from Arenys, Ribagorca, and his mother is from Pla d’Urgell, Pla d’Urgell. He lived in Sant Boi de Llobregat until he was 15 years old, where he attended Don-Bosco school. Later, he moved into the Barcelona suburb of Gracia, where he completed his schooling at La Salle.

Tremosa was the leader of the independent candidate list for the Catalan party Convergencia i Unio (CiU). He was elected MEP to the European Parliament at the 2009 European elections. Since then, he has been serving on the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. He was responsible for drafting reports about the supervision of Europe’s financial system (2010), European Central Bank (2011), and competition (2012).

Tremosa was also a substitute on Committee on Transport and Tourism between 2009 and 2014. He actively participated in the debates on the Mediterranean Corridor and Single European Railway Directive (2012), as well as the discussions on a common agricultural policy.

Ramon Tremosa i Balcells is a Spanish economist, politician and professor at the Department of Economic Theory of the University of Barcelona. He received his Doctorate on the impact of macroeconomic policies in the Catalan manufacturing sector (1983-1995). Since 2009, he was an independent Convergencia i Unio MEP and was re-elected in 2014. He is the author of several books and articles on monetary politics, fiscal Federalism, and regional economics.

He completed his undergraduate studies at University of Barcelona in 1992. From 1987 to 1993, he worked as a tax consultant. He received his doctorate in 1999 at the University of Barcelona. He has been lecturing there since 1992. Tremosa wrote his thesis at the Autonomous University of Barcelona on the impact of the monetary policies on the Catalan manufacturing sector (1983-1995). He also completed a Master of Applied Economic Analysis at University Pompeu Fabra in 1999. He was also a proponent of the Catalan Statute of Autonomy vote in 2006.

In May 2014 Tremosa was re-elected. In 2014, he co-sponsored (with Andreas Schwab) a non-binding bill before the European Parliament calling on the European Commission to consider separating Google’s search-engine business from its other commercial activities to ensure fair competition on the internet. He currently serves as the Parliament’s rapporteur on the annual report of the European Central Bank. From 2016 until 2017, Tremosa was part of the Parliament’s Committee of Inquiry into Money Laundering, Tax Avoidance and Tax Evasion (PANA) that investigated the Panama Papers revelations and tax avoidance schemes more broadly.
