Ralph Evans is one of the most popular and richest Boxer who was born on December 20, 1953 in Rhondda, United Kingdom. Ralph Evans, a former boxer from Wales, was born 20 December 1953. At the 1972 Summer Olympics, he represented Great Britain and reached the semi-finals before being defeated by Gyorgy Gedo. He was the first Welsh boxer ever to win an Olympic medal and received the bronze medal. He was also the most successful Welsh boxer to finish at an Olympic Games for 40 years, until it was eclipsed in 2012.

Evans, who was described by The Guardian as having “a most promising futurity” in the immediate aftermath to his Olympic defeat, decided to quit boxing shortly after the tournament. He was 19 years old. Evans fought just once more. He was called upon to fill in for a late-arriving fighter who had pulled out of a boxing event organized by his father’s club. Later, Evans worked for the club as a coach for his younger brother Wayne. This culminated in his professional career that ended with a defeat to Johnny Owen in 1978.

Evans faced Abrams in an elimination for a spot at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Evans won on points at Caerphilly’s Double Diamond Club, reversing his defeat. However, the win was not well received by some authorities who had appointed Abrams to be the British Boxing captain at the event. After Abrams sustained a cut to his eye, a rematch was called for Evans in order to win. Evans was drawn against Salvador Garcia, a Mexican 18-year-old in the first round of the Olympics. Evans was late to the bout and so Evans briefly spent some time in the crowd talking with the spectators. Evans won the bout with a victory of 4-1 over Evans, a fellow southpaw.

Evans was selected to represent Wales at 1971 European Amateur Boxing Championships, Madrid. He lost a controversial split decision to Franco Udella in Madrid, despite having knocked down his opponent five times during their bout. In protest of the delay, disgruntled spectators tore up their seats and threw them in the ring.

Evans lost to Patrick Cowdell, his second year in the National Association of Boy’s Clubs’ final. The tournament winner received a training scholarship from Joe Bugner, a heavyweight in Norway. Evans’ loss to Cowdell was so close that he was offered a place. Evans lived with Bugner during the scholarship. Evans was the first Welsh Amateur Boxing Association champion in the newly established light flyweight division. At 17 years old, he reached the British final but was defeated by Mickey Abrams in May 1971.

Evans dominated Chilean Héctor Velásquez in the second round, claiming a 5–0 points victory in a performance that was described as “the purest boxing exhibition of the tournament.” He repeated the feat in the quarter-final by defeating Chanyalew Haile of Ethiopia, including scoring a knockdown of his opponent in the first round. His victories earned him a semi-final fight against Hungarian György Gedó. Evans was defeated by Gedó who proved too strong for the Welshman, opening a cut in Evans’ mouth during the bout. Despite his defeat, Evans secured a bronze medal for Britain, becoming the first Welshman to win an Olympic medal in boxing. His performance remained the best finish by a Welsh boxer at the Olympics for 40 years, until the 2012 Summer Olympics where Fred Evans won a silver medal.
