Ralf Dujmovits is one of the most popular and richest Mountaineer who was born on December 5, 1961 in Brühl, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Dujmovits was conceived in Buhl in Baden-Wurttemberg in 1961. In 1981, he completed his Abitur (final school exams), and spent the next year climbing in the Andes and traveling around South America before he began his medical degree at Heidelberg University. After eight semesters, he left the university and began training to be a mountain guide in 1985.
Dujmovits attempted to climb Mount Everest for the sixth time in 2012. This was the first time he had tried to do so without bottled oxygen. Although he didn’t reach the summit, he snapped a photo of the climbers lining up to climb the mountain. The photo went viral and was called “the most iconic photograph of the year” by Outside magazine. Darek Zaluski and he attempted the first winter ascent to Nanga Parbat in 2014. However, dangerous conditions forced them to abandon the expedition.
Dujmovits started climbing in the Himalayas and Karakorum in 1990s. He began with ascents on Dhaulagiri II (1990), Mount Everest (1992), K2 (94), Cho Oyu (95) and Shisha Paangma (1997). In 1999, Dujmovits’ climb of the Eiger’s northwall in Switzerland became a major news story. This 33-hour-long broadcast was made public. Dujmovits went on to summit Broad Peak (1999) and Gasherbrum II (2000), but it was not until he climbed Nanga Parbat in 2001 that he decided to attempt to climb all fourteen mountains in the world higher than 8000 metres (“eight-thousanders”). He climbed Annapurna I in 2004 and Gasherbrum I in two months. Then he ascents Shisha Pangma (2006), Kangchenjunga (2006) and Manaslu (2007, (2007)) and Makalu (2008). Dujmovits, his ex-wife Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and Hirotaka Takeuchi, climbed Lhotse, his final peak at 8000m, on 20 May 2009. Dujmovits became the 16th person in the world to summit all 14 eight-thousanders and the first German to do so.
