He succeeded Ulrich Junghanns from the Christian Democratic Union. He was still in the same position as Minister-President Dietmark Woidke until he retired in 2014.

From 1973 to 1981, Christoffers was in vocational training as a locksmith and shipbuilder. Later, he studied social science at Parteihochschule Karl Marx. He was a party school of Socialist Unity Party of Germany. From 1973 to 1981, he worked as a philosophy lecturer in Bogensee at the Free German Youth- administered Wilhelm Pieck youth academy. He was a researcher associate at the Landtag of Brandenburg’s PDS Group from 1991 to 1994.
Christoffers joined Party of Democratic Socialism in 1990. He remained a member of PDS until 2007. PDS was renamed The Left Party. In 2005, PDS merged with the Electoral Alternative for Labor and Social Justice(WASG) to create The Left (Die Linke). He was a member in Brandenburg’s Landtag (State Parliament), from October 1994 to 2019.
Christoffers faced criticism from within his party for his support of the continuation of lignite mining in the region of Lusatia in southeast Brandenburg. In a 2010 interview, Wolfgang Nešković, Die Linke Member of the Bundestag for Cottbus – Spree-Neiße, criticized Christoffers’ position for both environmental and political reasons, arguing that support for lignite mining could result in Die Linke being perceived as being to the right of the SPD, their coalition partner.
