Rajini Thiranagama is one of the most popular and richest Human Rights Activists who was born on February 23, 1954 in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. Dr. Rajani Thiranagama, nee Rajasingham (23 February 1954 – 21 September 1989), was a Tamil feminist and human rights activist who was assassinated in the name of the Tamil Tigers. She had criticised their atrocities. She was at the time of her assassination the head of the Department of Anatomy of the University of Jaffna. She is also an active member of University Teachers for Human Rights Jaffna branch, of which she is one of its founding members.
Rajani, who witnessed evidence of human rights violations by LTTE and IPKF, co-authored The Broken Palmyra. The book details the violence that took place in Jaffna during the 1980s.

A few weeks after the publication of book The Broken Palmyra, on 21 September 1989, she was shot dead at Thirunelvely, Jaffna in front of her house by a gunman while cycling back from work. 1978 Rajani starts her first post as an intern at Jaffna Hospital. She completed her internship in 1979 and moved to Haldumulla to become a doctor. In 1980, she was back in Jaffna to teach anatomy at the University of Jaffna. Jaffna was already a battleground in the early stages Sri Lanka’s civil War. Many people were moving to Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and other countries from Jaffna.

Rajani was born to middle-class Tamil Christian parents in Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka. She was the second of four daughters. After completing her primary and second school education in Jaffna, she entered University of Colombo in 1973 to study medicine. She became involved in student politics while at university.
She met Dayapala Thiranagama, a political student leader from Kelaniya University, during her time at Colombo University. Dayapala came from rural Sinhala Buddhist ancestry. Rajani broke all religious and ethnic barriers to marry Dayapala in 1977. They had two daughters, Narmada (1978) and Sharika ( 1980). Narmada currently lives in Britain, and works for UNISON, a public sector union. Sharika, who is married to Thomas Blom Hansen, is currently living in California and teaches at Stanford University. Sharika played the role of her mother in No More Tears Sister, a documentary film about Rajani.
Inspired by her elder sister Nirmala, then a member of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Rajani became involved with the LTTE, administering care to those wounded in action. In 1983, Rajani travelled to England under Commonwealth scholarship for postgraduate studies in anatomy at Liverpool Medical School. There she launched a major international campaign for the release of her sister who was imprisoned in 1982 under Sri Lanka’s Prevention of Terrorism Act. She also maintained her links with LTTE by joining its London Committee to educate human rights groups and other international organisations about the atrocities occurring in Sri Lanka. While continuing to write and publish scientific papers, she also became implicated in grassroots organisations fighting for women’s rights and against the discrimination of Britain’s black people and became involved in the international campaigns of other liberation groups.
