Rajesh Mehta, a Bengaluru native, was born to Jasvantrai Mehta (and Chandrika Ben Mehta) on 20 June 1964. He was raised in Bangalore by a Jain family of lower- middle class, being the third brother to his three brothers, Prashant and Mahesh. His father immigrated from Morbi, Gujarat to Bangalore in 1946. He worked for a private company. He quit his job later and began a small business trading semi-precious stone in Gujarat under the name of “Rajesh Diamond Company”.

He attended St. Joseph’s School, and he studied at National College for 2 years. Although he wanted to become a doctor, he chose to work in his father’s jewelry business. Prashant, his brother, took over the family business. Bipin, his eldest brother and a bank employee, approached him for a loan of Rs 1200. He then started a silver trading company. He purchased jewellery from Chennai and sold it at Rajkot to his relatives for a profit. He began selling jewellery to wholesalers and retailers based in Gujarat. Later, they began to buy silver jewellery from Gujarat and sell it to wholesalers and retailers at Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. He popularized many ethnic Indian jewellery designs and cultures throughout India by this method. He created a company called “Rajesh Art Jewellers” and began bartering goods. With each barter cycle, the company’s capital base increased 50%. Mehta established a 10-person manufacturing unit in his garage in Bangalore to produce silver jewellery. The company was called ‘Rajesh Exports. The company exported gold to the United Kingdom, Dubai Oman, Kuwait, Americas, Europe and the United States. It had a turnover of INR 20 millions by 1992. In 1998, the export business grew to INR 1.25 billion. Mehta opened a retail store that is now known as ‘Shubh Jewellers. There are currently 81 Shubh shops in Karnataka.

Rajesh Exports purchased Valcambi in Switzerland, the largest gold refining plant in the world, in 2015. It can produce 400 tons small-sized gold bars and 500 tonnes of kilo bars each year. The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) certifies the gold bars that are produced.
