Raja Pervaiz Ashraf is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on December 26, 1950 in Sangara, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, an interior Sindhi citizen, was born 26 December 1950 in Sanghar. After graduating from the University of Sindh, he was active in agriculture before entering politics. He is married to Nusrat Povaiz Ashraf, and they have four children: two boys and two girls. Ashraf is a member of the Minhas clan in Pakhral. He was born in Gujar Khan, an area in the Rawalpindi district of the Potohar region of northern Punjab. Numerous prominent military and political figures hail from the Potohar region. Ashraf is from a middle-class Potohari-speaking family that includes landowners and has a tradition in politics. His uncle was a minister in Ayub Khan’s cabinet during the 1960s. His parents, who owned land in Sanghar, Sindh, were farmers. This is where he was raised. Ashraf can fluently communicate in English, Urdu and Sindhi.
After the 2008 election, he was appointed head of the Water and Power Ministry of the coalition government consisting of PML-N and ANP. His tenure as power minister saw a severe shortage of electricity in the country. Power cuts (loadshedding) were still frequent. He was criticized for promising that the country’s power crisis would be resolved “by 2008”, despite the fact that the country experienced frequent blackouts. Legislators who sought answers to the power crisis demanded that he be made a top minister in the National Assembly. A report about his performance in Parliament shows that the water and power ministry during Ashraf’s tenure received 1,147 questions and queries from officials, out of which only 60% were answered.
Ashraf is expected to visit Kabul, Afghanistan, to hold talks with the Afghan leadership on the peace process in Afghanistan amidst the ongoing Afghan war and to discuss the status of Afghan-led reconciliation with the Afghan Taliban. The visit comes at a time when Pakistan’s relations with the United States have improved in the aftermath of the 2011 NATO attack. On 15 July, he performed a two-day state visit to Saudi Arabia, his first official tour since becoming prime minister. During the visit, he would perform Umrah, meet with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, discuss the status of relations between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia and also meet members of the Pakistani community in Saudi Arabia.
On his visit to Kabul, Afghanistan, in late July 2012, Ashraf met with Karzai government officials and engaged in talks with the two main opposition leaders Abdullah Abdullah from the National Coalition of Afghanistan and Ahmad Zia Massoud from the National Front of Afghanistan. Among other things they discussed the need for increased and regular dialogue between leaders of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The apex court ordered the National Accountability Bureau on 30 March to pursue those who held the position of minister for power and water from 2006 until the next general election. NAB issued arrest warrants to 33 people, including Ashraf, on 20/04.
