He is also the William A. Ackman professor of public economics at Harvard University. At 28 years old, Chetty was granted tenure and became the youngest tenured professor in Harvard’s history. He was a recipient the John Bates Clark Medal, and a MacArthur Fellow in 2012. He is currently an advisor editor for the Journal of Public Economics.
He was one of 23 Fellows who received $500,000 from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation over five years as a recipient for one of their Genius Grants.
Chetty was awarded the Padma Shri, an award for distinguished service in any field, by the Government of India in 2015.
George Mason University economist Tyler Cowen described Chetty in 2017 as “the single most influential economist in the world today.”
The Economist and The New York Times ranked Chetty among the top eight young economists worldwide in 2008. Chetty is one of the most quoted young economists worldwide. He was awarded the Young Labor Economist Award by the Institute for the Study of Labor in 2010 for his paper “Moral Hazard Versus Liquidity, Optimal Unemployment Insurance” in the Journal of Political Economy.

Chetty was born in New Delhi (India) and lived there until he was nine years old. His family immigrated to America in 1988. Chetty graduated in 1997 from University School of Milwaukee and received his AB in 2000 from Harvard University. Chetty continued at Harvard to complete his PhD in 2003. His thesis was titled Consumption obligations, risk preferences and optimal unemployment insurance. Martin Feldstein, his mentor, told Chetty as a sophomore that he should pursue his own ideas. He had counterintuitively suggested that higher interest rates might lead to greater investment.
At the age of 23 Chetty was an assistant professor of Economics at the University of California at Berkeley. He became a tenured associate Professor at 27. Chetty returned to Harvard in 2009 as the Bloomberg Professor of Economics and director of the Lab for Economic Applications and Policy. Chetty was appointed a professor at Stanford’s Economics Department in 2015. John Friedman, Raj Chetty’s frequent coauthor, announced in June 2018 that Chetty would be returning to Harvard.
Chetty was the recipient of the 2013 John Bates Clark Medal, awarded by the American Economic Association to “that American economist under the age of forty who is adjudged to have made a significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge.”
