He was in contention to be a member of the U.S. Olympic Team at the 2004 Olympic Trials. He was chosen as an alternate. He was fourth in the national championships overall and first in rings at the trials in 2004. However, he was not selected. He was third at the Olympic trials in 2008 and fourth overall in the Visa Championships. In 2008, he was again an alternate to the 6-man Team. Because his strongest events overlapped with Morgan Hamm’s, and the team needed stronger gymnasts in other disciplines, this was because he was third in the Olympic trials and Visa Championships. Bhavsar was chosen to the team after Paul Hamm suffered an injury. He won a bronze medal.
After obtaining his goals as an Olympic gymnast, in 2010 Bhavsar started working for Cirque du Soleil as an artist for their performance show Iris which debuted in July 2011.
Bhavsar was the inventor of two new elements in gymnastics, now named after him. The still rings feature “The Bhavsar”, which was invented in 2003. It’s a front lever start that allows movement to a final position, called a Maltese. The Moscow World Cup 2009 saw the creation of “The Bhavsar” which is a parallel bar move. This is a tkatchev-style release move that starts on one side of the bars and ends on the other.
