Hans Knaak, his father, taught him the game at the young age of 5. He reached the pinnacle in junior chess, and was named national junior champion in his age group in 1966, 1969, and 1970. He was awarded the International Master title and the Grandmaster title in 1973, respectively. In pursuit of a profession, he completed a mathematics degree in 1971, and then a teaching diploma.
He has won first place in international tournaments at Olomouc 1972 and Leipzig 1977 (shared by Malich and Smejkal), Halle 1979 (shared between Farago, Uhlmann), and Cienfuegos 1985. Notable outright second places were also achieved at Halle 1974 (after Tal), Bucharest 1976, and Trnava 1980 (1980 after Sturua). He shared second place at Zinnowitz 1971 and Sandomierz 1976, as well as Potsdam 1985. At Bucharest 1973, he came third and Camaguey 1974 he finished fourth.
Prior to unification in 1990, Knaak represented East Germany (otherwise known as the German Democratic Republic) and enjoyed unbridled success in the national championship, taking the title in 1974, 1978, 1982, 1983 and 1984, while finishing a close runner-up in 1975. Throughout the seventies and eighties he rivalled Wolfgang Uhlmann as the nation’s best player.
