He began his schooling as an Indian Talent Search scholar and then went on to complete his undergraduate studies at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi. In 1977, he earned a MS in Physics. He then moved to the United States and received a second master’s in Physics from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign in 1979. He also completed his doctoral studies at the same institution under the supervision of Michael Wortis, securing a PhD in 1982. He returned to India in 1984 to become a research associate at the Indian Institute of Science after completing his post-doctoral studies at Cornell University.
In 1996, Pandit was elected as a fellow of The Indian Academy of Sciences. He was elected as a fellow of The World Academy of Sciences in 2015. In 2012, the American Physical Society gave him an Outstanding Referee Citation for his work in Physical Review and Physical Review Letters journals. He has received several awards, including the 2007 DAE Raja Ramanna Lecture on The mathematical modeling of cardiac arrhythmias at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre of Advanced Scientific Research. Since 2007, he has been a J. C. Bose National Fellowship of Science and Technology.
Since then, Pandit has served his entire career at IISc. Pandit has held many positions at IISc, including assistant professor (1990-96), research scientist (1985-1990), and associate professor (1996-2002). He was made a professor in 2002 and holds the position of chair of the Division for Physical and Mathematical Sciences. He was a member of JNCASR’s Condensed Matter Theory Unit from 2002 to 2012. He also held a three-year term as an adjunct professor at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research’s International Centre for Theoretical Sciences during 2009-12. He currently holds the MSIL Chair Professorship at IISc and the Honorary Professorship at JNCASR. He has been a visiting professor at Ohio State University, University of Missouri and Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics.

Rahul Pandit, an Indian condensed matter scientist and professor of Physics was born 22 April 1956. He is currently a divisional chair at The Indian Institute of Science. Pandit is a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and Indian National Science Academy. He is also known for his work on phase transitions, spatiotemporal chaos, and turbulence. Pandit was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhagnagar Prize in Science and Technology by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, an Indian apex agency for scientific research. This award is one of the most prestigious Indian science awards.
Pandit was a National Talent Search scholar in his college days (1972-1977). He finished first in Physics in his graduate examination in 1977. He was awarded the Exxon Fellowship while at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. On his return to India, Pandit was also a Young Associate of Indian Academy of Sciences. In 1988, he was awarded the Young Scientist Medal by the Indian National Science Academy. He was awarded the Shanti-Swarup Bhatnagar prize by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, one of the most prestigious Indian science awards. In 2004, he was awarded the Meghnad Saha Award from the University Grants Commission. The Indian Institute of Science also chose him to receive the Professor Rustom Choksi Award. He was the Distinguished Alumnus at IIT Delhi, his alma mater.
Pandit was involved, in the capacity of the secretary of the organizing committee, in the organization of STATPHYS 22 the international statistical physics conference of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics held at IISc campus in 2004. He is the secretary of the C3 Commission on Statistical Physics of the International Union for Pure and Applied Physics and has held the chair of IUPAP national committee in India. He is a former divisional associate editor of Physical Review Letters journal (2004–10) and a former member of the editorial advisory board of Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications of Elsevier (2001–07). He is a member of the divisional committee of the Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) program of the Department of Science and Technology and sits in the editorial board of Cambridge IISc Series, a publishing collaboration between the Indian Institute of Science and Cambridge University Press India. He has delivered invited speeches at various conferences including the International Symposium on Fluid Days held in December 2007–January 2008.
