Ra, pronounced “Ray”, has performed with Trooper since 1975 when their first album was published.
McGuire was awarded a fourth SOCAN Classic Award for 2005, “Oh, Pretty Lady.”
In 2007, he served as one of three judges for the CBC’s Seven Wonders of Canada competition and co-produced his son, Connor McGuire’s first solo album, Different After Dawn.
McGuire was featured when Trooper performed in the 2010 Olympics Victory Ceremonies in Vancouver, BC on February 21, 2010. Coverage of the event was broadcast in Canada and around the world on networks such as CTV and Much Music.
McGuire was presented with a SOCAN Classic Award for his Trooper song “Two for the Show”, which is given to songs that have received more than 100,000 radio plays. McGuire was nominated four times as a Juno Award ‘Composer Of The Year’ for his work as a songwriter. His recordings as Trooper’s singer have been nominated twice each for the ‘Album of the year’ and once for the ‘Best selling album of the year’. In 1980, Trooper was awarded the Juno Award for the ‘Group of the Years’ after being nominated in 1978 and 1979. McGuire was awarded the BC CARAS (JUNO), Award for Best Male Vocalist in 1980.
McGuire was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. He and his wife Debbie were the pioneers of the establishment of a Fine Arts school in Surrey, British Columbia from 1996 to 1998. White Rock Elementary is the current home of the school, with another planned for the northern part. The couple unsuccessfully fought against high-rise development in White Rock, British Columbia, in 2005.
