Qin starred alongside Zhou Xun in Red Sorghum (2014), based on Nobel laureate Mo Yan’s 1986 novel of the same name. Qin was born to a movie projectionist dad and an actress mother. She learned how to dance at the local Children’s Palace as a child. She was 6 years old when she was sent to a Peking Opera School in Yingkou. There, she spent the next ten year training in a harsh and strict environment. After completing her training, she joined the local Peking opera theater. After working for several years, Qin decided that she would audition for the Central Academy of Traditional Opera. Despite being late for the auditions Chang Li, the teacher responsible for recruiting, recognized Qin’s talent and offered her another chance. Qin was only able to find out that she was actually at the Central Drama Academy and not the Traditional Opera Academy after passing all the tests. She then enrolled in the school. Qin was cast in her first film by Fruit Chan, just a few months before she graduated from high school.
Qin is most well-known for her role as Qin in Durian Durian (2000), a film by Fruit Chan that depicts the lives of a young girl in Hong Kong and her neighbor, a sex worker. Qin was awarded the Best Actress award and the Best New Performer awards at the 38th Taiwanes Golden Horse Awards.
Qin starred in arthouse comedy The Piano in a Factory (2011) by Zhang Meng, offering to work without pay and supporting the film in post-production work. The film won plautis from critics and film makers, and numerous awards, including the Best Actress award at the China Movie Channel Media Awards for Qin. Qin also co-wrote and starred in the Taiwanese drama film Return Ticket (2011), based on a true story of a group of village women who rented a bus to go home for the holidays; which won the Best Original Screenplay award at the Golden Horse Awards.
