Pullela Gopichand is one of the most popular and richest Badminton Player who was born on November 16, 1973 in Nagandla, India. Pullela Gopichand was a child of Pullela Subash Chaudra and ] Prakasam, Andhra Pradesh. He was initially interested in playing cricket but his older brother encouraged him to try badminton. For a time, his family settled in Nizamabad. He attended St. Paul’s High School in Hyderabad for his education. He graduated from A. V. College in Hyderabad with a degree in public administration. In 1990 and 1991, he was captain of the Indian mixed universities badminton team.
He won the All England Open Badminton Championships in Birmingham in 2001. In the semi-finals, he defeated Peter Gade, then defeated Chen Hong of China to win the trophy. After Prakash Padukone in 1980, he became the second Indian to accomplish the feat.
After retiring from his playing career, Pullela Gopichand founded the Gopichand Badminton Academy in 2008, after reportedly mortgaging his own house. Nimmagadda Prasad, a renowned industrialist donated ₹ 50 million (US$700,000) on a condition to win a medal for India at Olympics in badminton . The academy produced several badminton players including Saina Nehwal, P. V. Sindhu, Sai Praneeth, Parupalli Kashyap, Srikanth Kidambi, Arundhati Pantawane, Gurusai Datt and Arun Vishnu. Saina Nehwal went on to win the bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics and P. V. Sindhu the silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics and first Indian to win the BWF World Championships. Gopichand also served as the official Indian Olympic Badminton Team coach at the 2016 Brazil’s Rio Olympic.
He won the Toulouse open championship and the Scottish open championship, both in France, in 1999. He was also the winner of the Asian satellite tournament, held in Hyderabad that year. However, he lost the final match in the German grand prix championship.

Pullela Gopichand, who was born 16 November 1973, is an ex-Indian badminton player. He is currently the Indian Badminton Team’s Chief National Coach. He was the second Indian after Prakash Padukone to win the All England Open Badminton Championships 2001. He is the founder of Gopichand Badminton Academy. He was awarded the Arjuna Award 1999, Dronacharya Award 2009, and Padma Bhushan in 2014 – India’s highest civilian award.
Before Prakash Padukone accepted Gopichand at Prakash Padukone academy, he was coached by S. M. Arif [4]. Ganguly Prasad was also his coach at the SAI Bangalore. Gopichand won the 1996 National Badminton Championship title. He went on to win it five more times, up until 2000. At the 1998 Indian national games held in Imphal, Gopichand won two golds and one silver. He represented India at the 3 Thomas Cup tournaments on an international level. He won a gold medal in 1996’s SAARC badminton tournament in Vijayawada. In 1997, he defended his title at the Colombo games. He won a silver medal in the team event at the 1998 Commonwealth Games and a bronze in the men’s singles.
Gopichand married fellow badminton player P. V. V. Lakshmi on 5 June 2002. They have two children, a daughter named Gayathri and a son.
