In preparation to take the reins of DI Corporation from his father, Park had originally planned to pursue a degree in the field of business in the business administration program at Boston University in 1996. After arriving in America, he was not interested in studying. United States, he lost enthusiasm for his studies, spending the rest of his tuition on entertainment and musical instrument equipment, such as the computer, an electronic keyboard as well as an MIDI interface. After taking an English-language summer class and then completing one semester of studies, Park dropped out of Boston University and applied to take a course at the Berklee College of Music instead. While in Berklee, Park took core courses in ear-training as well as writing contemporary and music synthesis. However, the school soon dissolved and he was back in South Korea to pursue a career as a musician, but without a qualification at neither Boston University or Berklee.

In 2002, Psy participated in an anti-American concert after a U.S. military convoy accidentally struck and killed two 14-year-old South Korean schoolgirls in the Yangju highway incident. The soldiers involved in the incident were acquitted by U.S. military courts, which fueled a significant amount of anti- American sentiment in South Korea.
