Prommin Lertsuridej M.D. Prommin Lertsuridej, M.D. (Thai?phrhminthr elissuriyedch), was a Thai politician and former student leader. He was also former Secretary General to Prime Min Thaksin Shinawatra. He was also former Deputy Prime minister in charge of economic affairs and former Minister for Energy in the Thaksin government. Prommin was detained for three weeks by the junta after a military coup in 2006 overthrew Thaksin’s government. Prommin was released from captivity in October 2006. Prommin has been married to Mattaya Lertsuridej M.D. Prommin is married to Mattaya Lertsuridej, M.D.

In 1993, he started his business career as a Senior Manager of Business Development at IBC Cable TV. UTV later merged with IBC Cable TV to create United Broadcasting Corporation. Thaksin Shinawatra launched IBC. He later became the General Manager of IBC Cambodia and Laos. He was promoted to General Manager of IBC in 1995. He was appointed Vice President of Ground Services at Shin Satellite from 1997 to 2000. He was the Managing Director at C.S. Communication, another Shin Corporation company.

From October 2002 to February 2003, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister in charge of economic affairs, replacing Somkid Jatusripitak. This gave him responsibility for all key economic portfolios, including the Finance Ministry, the Commerce Ministry, the Industry Ministry, the Energy Ministry, the National Energy Policy Committee, the Board of Investment, and the privatisation of state enterprises. Key tasks included managing the 650 billion baht debts of the Financial Institutions Development Fund, price controls for agricultural products, and hallmark Thai Rak Thai grass-roots programs like farmer debt suspension, One Tambon One Product (OTOP), the Village Fund, and the People’s Bank.

From February 2003 to March 2005, he was Minister of Energy, primarily responsible for controversial issues like privatization of EGAT and price controls.

Prommin was the Director of Nong Song Hong Hospital, Khonkaen, from 1985 to 1988. After completing a Pearson Fellowship, funded by the IDRC, in public administration at Ottawa University and Carleton University of Canada, he became Director of Phon Hospital in Khonkaen. He was the Head of the Health Planning Section of the Thai Ministry of Public Health from 1991 to 1993. In 1992, he was admitted to the Board of Preventive Medicine of Thailand.
