Promis, is a Chilean-American singer, songwriter, and composer. He was born January 28, 1973 in Vina del Mar (Chile), to Jose Promis, a well-respected Chilean literature professor.

In 2012, the first Promis & Matthews album, “Vertigo Height”, was released. The sixth Promis album, titled, “Vertigo Hills”, featured two Promis original tracks that hadn’t found homes on any previous Promis solo albums.This is the second Promis & Matthews album and eighth overall Promis album. It’s called “Sunset Boulevard”. It was released in 2015 and featured direct quotes and inspirations from the 1950 Billy Wilder film. The film also includes an electro remake Amanda Lear’s “The Sphinx” The Rainbow Hub reviews “Sunset Boulevard.” as “… is a worthwhile listen that takes you into a world many people dream about but rarely get to experience.

In the beginning of 2016 his original songs comprised most of the musical A Night at the Black Cat Theatre at the Edgemar Center for the Arts in Santa Monica. Together with Juwelia St. St. he wrote the musical “Hungry Roses” which contains original songs by both with weird lyrics in English and German. Also, Promis plays the show “Black Market” with Parisian actress Anne Wagret performing songs by Kurt Weill, Friedrich Hollaender, Promis himself, and other artists

Promis wanted to return to Mediterranean music in 2009 and so they recorded “Life Is Grand!” Ayhan Sahin, a New York-based Turkish music producer, produced the album and co-wrote it. Sahin released the album on his label “Young Pals Music”. It featured a pop sound, where he teamed up with other singers such as Karine Hannah for “Lovesick”.Promis returned to his original sound in 2011 For his fifth album, “Love Stories,” he teamed up with Ian Matthews. The album was recorded while his mother was dying from cancer. This is evident in the darker ballads. The album has lighter moments, and songs that are inspired by Balkan music.

He and his family fled Chilean dictator Pinochet’s regime as a child, when he was four years old. They eventually emigrated to Arizona with his parents. Promis received a degree in Media Arts & Journalism from the University of Arizona. He then moved to Los Angeles in 1997, where he worked in various music industry jobs. Promis learned how to play the piano and wrote songs, becoming a professional musician.

Although the recordings are quite rough, his self-titled debut album (2006) already shows the influence French chanson and pop. His second album, “Promis 2”, from 2007, shows more influence of orchestral, epic and gothic soundscapes. However, it also features Mediterranean and Balkan music. It uses Promis songs as a basis for a darker synthesizer sound.

In 2013 Promis and his producer Matthews began to produce “Indiscretions,” which was another big album filled with all Promis’ influences, from cabaret and Balkan to electronic to straightforward pop/rock. The album also features two song covers: Nick Cave’s “The Weeping Song,” recorded with a Portuguese band, and Greek singer/songwriter Stavros Papastavrou’s “From the Beginning” (Greek: Απ’ την αρχή), which was a huge hit in Greece 1982. Leicester Bangs reviews “Indiscretions” in his blog: “All in all it’s the sort of record that the dedicated listener can really get their teeth into and I’m happy to recommend it – unreservedly.” After a break from the solo-Promis, he moved to Berlin in 2016. Promis and Matthews finished Promis’ ninth offering “Electric Cabaret”. This was Promis’ first album released by the label darumeshi records and had three singles released to date: Dragons, We’re Grown Up People (2 versions) and Can I Just See What it Feels Like to Kiss You. Also Promis released several exclusive videos of other songs from the album.
