Moreno stated that he refused Chick-fil A a permit to open North Elston Avenue restaurant. Moreno claimed that the reason he denied Chick-fil-A a permit to open a restaurant on North Elston Avenue was because the president of the company held opposing views about gay marriage (opposition). Moreno stated that he had spoken to Chickfil-A executives in September that year and they told him that they would give a “statement to tolerance” to employees and operators.
In June 2018, Moreno was accused of impersonating a police officer after flashing the badge distributed to aldermen as “peace officers” to compel a woman to move her car, so he could take the parking spot in the Wrigleyville neighborhood.
In February 2019, a former staffer accused Moreno of inappropriate behavior. She said in 2015 Moreno said to her and other aides, “OK, we’re gonna have a contest. Everyone’s gonna have to take off their shirts. The girls can keep their bras on. And if your body is better than mine, then you get a raise.”
After receiving endorsements from the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune, Moreno won his first term in Chicago’s municipal elections on February 22, 2011. Moreno tried to stop Chick-fila’s chicken restaurant being built in his ward during this term due to his political views. Moreno demanded that the company change their discriminatory policies, while critics challenged his commitment to freedom of speech, religious liberty and the first Amendment.
