Whitmore was the third and youngest child born to Shirley and Preston Alexander Whitmore in Detroit in 1962. After being promoted meritoriously to Corporal, and being discharged honorably from the Marines in 1962, Whitmore settled in California, attended Los Angeles City College, and received his associate degree of Arts. After completing his Associate Degree in Arts at Los Angeles City College, Whitmore transferred to California State University Northridge and received his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in political science. Whitmore graduated from CSUN and attended the University of La Verne College of Law. There he developed his writing skills, earning the prestigious American Jurisprudence Award.
Whitmore also has experience in theater and television, writing episodes for half-hour comedy series Malcolm & Eddie. This show starred Eddie Griffin and Malcolm Jamal Warner. Whitmore used his ability to create compelling characters for the stage. He wrote and directed two plays, Five A.M. starring Yvonna Kpacz-Wright. The plays featured five characters, each with their own views on women’s roles in today’s world, including “Lilith”. Preston Whitmore’s PIMP, starring Paul Farmer, is about a unapologetic hustler named Slim Jenkins, who is often remembered by those whose lives were touched. Both plays premiered at the famous Tiffany Theater on Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles. Whitmore was also the producer and writer of Blood Crime (2002), an television crime thriller starring Jonathan Schaech and James Caan.
Whitmore wrote, produced, and directed This Christmas (2007), starring Loretta Devine, Idris Elba, Lauren London, Regina King, and Chris Brown. It is a Christmastime drama centered around the Whitfield family’s first holiday together in four years. The motion picture was inspired by individuals in Whitmore’s actual family, the three Whitfield sons representing Whitmore in different phases of his life. The film won The Asian Excellence Award for Outstanding Actress in a Movie; Sharon Leal, nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture; Loretta Devine, an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture; Preston A. Whitmore, II, and an MTV Movie Award for Breakthrough Performance; Chris Brown.
Whitmore recently completed production on the feature film True to the Game directed by him, starring Columbus Short, Nelsan Ellis, Jennifer Freeman, Nafessa Williams, Andra Fuller, Draya Michele and Vivica Fox, based on the popular Teri Woods novel of the same name. It was released theatrically the summer of 2017 and debuted on Netflix in 2018.
His work often focuses on the high rate of incarceration of African American women and men. Three films that he produced and wrote address this issue. The first Lockdown (2000) starred Richard T. Jones and Gabriel Casseus as three friends wrongly imprisoned. It follows the gritty breakdown of their innocence, and friendship behind bars. Rainforest Columbia Tri-star collaborated on the film, which was one of Columbia Tri-Star’s best-selling independent releases. Civil Brand (2002) is a documentary about slave-labor programs in women’s prisons. This shoestring production starring LisaRaye and N’Bushe Wright, Monica Calhoun and Mos Def, Clifton Powell, and Da Brat won the Blockbuster Award as Best Film, Best Actor; Clifton Powell at the 2002 American Black Film Festival; Audience Award as Best Film, Special Jury Prize and the 2002 Urbanworld Film Festival. It was also featured at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival.

Preston Alexander Whitmore II, born June 26, 1962, is an American screenwriter, producer, and film director. Preston Whitmore is most well-known for his comedy-drama This Christmas, which he directed in 2007. Preston was nominated for an NAACP Image Award in 2008 for Outstanding Direction. Whitmore is currently working on a variety of feature and television projects at The Preston Picture Company, his Los Angeles-based production company.
Whitmore’s film-making debut was made in 1995 when he wrote and directed The Walking Dead (1995). This movie chronicles the lives and missions of four African American soldiers fighting in Vietnam. After serving in the Marine Corps, Whitmore was inspired to make this movie. It featured Allen Payne and Eddie Griffin as well as Vonte Sweet and Joe Morton. He then wrote and produced Fled (1996). This action movie starred Laurence Fishburne as Stephen Baldwin and Stephen Baldwin as the two prisoner on the run to discover a hidden stash of cash and incriminating evidence that would bring down Cuban Mafia.
In 2004, after completing a production rewrite of the Get Shorty sequel entitled Be Cool, Whitmore wrote, produced and directed the Screen Gems film, Doing Hard Time (2004), starring Boris Kodjoe, Michael K. Williams, Giancarlo Esposito and Sticky Fingaz. Moving away from the gritty subject matter of prison films, Whitmore wrote and directed the basketball drama, Crossover (2006), a film shot in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan about street basketball starring Anthony Mackie, Wesley Jonathan, Wayne Brady, Michael Bivins and Allen Payne.
