Prem Das Rai Biography

Prem Das Rai is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on July 31, 1954 in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India. Prem Das Rai, a Sikkim Democratic Front party politician was born 31 July 1954. Rai was an Indian Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), first elected in 2009 and then re- elected in 2014. He served his second term in 2009-2014. He did not receive the ticket from SDF in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

His political career began in 1993-1994 when he joined Sikkim Democratic Front Party (SDF). The Party was established by Shri Pawan Chamling, his political mentor. Rai joined the SDF during its early years. Rai was the party’s General secretary and worked at all levels of its structure. He helped to create the SDF’s vision and manifesto, and continues his work for the party as well as the Sikkimese.

He has the distinction of being the first Member of Parliament with both Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Management degrees. In 2002, he was awarded the prestigious and selective Eisenhower Fellowship (USA) for his contribution to Sikkim’s economic and industrial growth.

In 2012, he was awarded with Distinguished Alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad, and is also a Distinguished Alumnus of IIT Kanpur.

Between 1985 and 2006, Mr. Rai was also an entrepreneur prolifically. His achievements include bringing computers to Sikkim and establishing an email service. This was a Bulletin Board Service that connected Gangtok with Kolkata, before the internet became widely available. He edited the Gangtok Times weekly for a decade with his father between 1994 and 2004.

Rai attended Wynberg Allen School in Mussoorie (now Uttar Pradesh) on a Government of India scholarship. In 1976, he received his chemical engineering degree from IIT Kanpur and in 1978, he received his Post-Graduate Diploma of Management (MBA) from IIM Ahmedabad.

After beginning his career in Kolkata with Bank of America, he returned to Sikkim in 1979 and served in various capacities, including Chairman of Sikkim Investment and Development Corporation Limited (SIDICO), Chairman of Sikkim Scheduled Tribes and All Other Backward Classes Financial Development Corporation, (SABCCO) and Founding Chairman of Ecotourism and Conservation Society of Sikkim, 2001-2009. He was also the CEO (Northeast India), of BASIX (2008). BASIX is India’s leading micro-finance and livelihood-promotional institution for livelihood promotion and micro-finance and employment promotion and financial institutions.

Rai has undertaken leadership courses at Yale, Oxford, Harvard and Princeton Universities on invitation. He has also lectured in Universities and Institutions in Tokyo, Japan, sponsored by the Sasakawa Foundation, and has attended the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council working sessions. He was awarded the Eisenhower Fellowship in 2000 for distinguished contribution to the economic and industrial growth of Sikkim.
