Pratap Chandra Sarangi, who was born 4 January 1955, is a Minister of state in the Government of India. He is responsible for Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. He is a politician from Balasore in Odisha. He also serves as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s National Executive. He was elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly twice: in 2004 and 2009, and again in 2009 and 2014. Both times, he was from Nilagiri. Through the revolutionary concept of Ekal Vidyalaya, or single- teacher schools, which is community-funded, he revolutionized primary education in rural areas.

Graham Staines, an Australian Christian missionary, and his children were burned to death in 1999 while they were sleeping in their station wagon in Manoharpur-Keonjhar, Odisha. It was allegedly done by a gang from Bajrang Dal. Pratap Sarangi, the Bajrang Dal’s chief in 1999, was convicted. In 2003, Dara Singh, a man with links to the Bajrang Dal and 12 others were convicted. Pratap denied this, claiming that the investigation wasn’t done properly and impartially. Two years later, Singh was sentenced to death. The Orissa high court also commuted Singh’s sentence and released 11 other defendants who were sentenced in life sentences. There was no evidence against Pratap Sarangi. The official inquiry of the Wadhwa Commission found no evidence that any single group was involved in the attack. However, 13 individuals associated with Bajrang Dal were later convicted. A second official inquiry by National Commission for Minorities revealed that the attackers cheered “long Live the Bajrang Dal” prior to the attack.

In May 2019, Sarangi became Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries.
