After averaging 10.3 rebounds and 10.6 points the previous year, 1995-96 was his best season with the Mavericks. He averaged 11.3 points per game and 10.8 rebounds per match while making 14 of 39 3-point attempts. He has a career average of 7.0 points per game and 7.4 rebounds in the NBA. In 1995-96, he was able to score 28 rebounds in one game for the Mavericks. This is still a team record.

During Jones’ tenure with Denver, he approached Joe Sakic of the Colorado Avalanche about his son playing ice hockey. Sakic advised the elder Jones to enroll his sons in skating classes first. In 2013, Seth Jones played for the United States under-20 ice hockey team which won gold at the world junior tournament. Caleb also was a member of the 2017 United States team which accomplished the same feat.

On August 14, 2013, he was hired as an assistant coach for the Indiana Pacers. Popeye worked with All-Stars like Roy Hibbert and Paul George, and reached the Eastern Conference Finals his first two years with the team.

Jones was born in Dresden, Tennessee. He played college basketball at Murray State University. Jones was a three-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection and a two-time honorable note All-America. He was also named OVC Player-of- the-Year in 1990 and 1991. Jones was named OVC’s Athlete-of-the Year in 1991, 1992. His #54, which he wore in MSU’s men’s basketball, hangs in the CFSB Center in Murray. Jones is fourth on Murray State’s all time scoring list, with 2,057 point. Jones is Murray State’s all time leader in rebounding with 1,374, which he also led in the 1990-91 season. He is the only Murray State player to have scored more than 2000 points and accumulated over 1,000 rebounds.

After graduating from college, he was picked by the Houston Rockets in Round 2 (41st overall) of 1992 NBA Draft. However, his rights were sold to the Dallas Mavericks to acquire those of Eric Riley, former University of Michigan Center. After playing in Europe professionally for one season, he was traded to the Mavericks for Riley’s former Michigan Wolverines shooting guard, Jimmy King. Jones played for the Boston Celtics as well as the Denver Nuggets (Washington Wizards), and Golden State Warriors. Jones played 26 of the 82 games in the 2002-03 season for the Mavericks.

Following his 11-year career year in the NBA, Jones decided to pursue coaching professional basketball. He first worked as a player development coach with the Dallas Mavericks. After spending the 2007–08 through the 2009–10 season with the Mavericks, he earned a coaching job with the New Jersey / Brooklyn Nets as an assistant coach.
