Theodore Joseph “Ted” Horowitz, born March 31, 1960 in The Bronx (New York City), United States), plays under the stage name Popa Chubby. (A play on the slang term “pop a cheeky”, which means to have an erection) is an American Rock/Electric blues singer, composer and guitarist.

Galea Horowitz, his ex-wife, recorded Vicious Country in 2008 and it was released by Dixiefrog. In March 2009, French Canal+ TV station selected Vicious Country as the ‘Record of the week’.

Two albums previously available only in France – Live at FIP and Wild – were compiled by the Blind Pig label and released as Big Man, Big Guitar in 2005, followed by Stealing the Devil’s Guitar a year later. The Fight Is On, was Horowitz’s first studio album after a two-year hiatus. It was released in February 2010 on the Provogue label in Europe, and Blind Pig in North America. A world tour followed.

In 2015, he released Big Bad and Beautiful, a two disc live CD recorded in France with Dave Keyes on Keyboards and Francesco and Andrea Beccaro Bass and Drums. In 2016 he released The Catfish on French Verychords Label and on PCP Productions in North America. This record yielded both the 3D animated video of the title track by Laurent Mercier of Callicore, and the tribute Blues For Charlie.

Horowitz signed with Blind Pig Records in 2000 and released How’d A White Boy Get The Blues? 2001. The album was a slight departure in Horowitz’s musical direction and included elements of hip-hop and contemporary pop. In 2002, The Good, the Bad and the Chubby was released. It featured the 9/11 commentary “Somebody Let the Devil out”. In 2003, Blind Pig published a collection of early Horowitz recordings called The Hungry Years. One year later, Horowitz released Peace, Love, and Respect.

Horowitz started playing drums at the age of thirteen. Soon after, he started listening to the music by the Rolling Stones. Horowitz grew up in 1970s but was heavily influenced by 1960s artists like Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and others. Although he was a blues musician in his twenties, he also played the backing vocals for Richard Hell, a punk rock poet. Horowitz was first known to the public after he won a national blues talent hunt sponsored by KLON (now KKJZ), a Long Beach public radio station. He was awarded the New Artist Of The Year award and was selected as the opening act for the Long Beach Blues Festival 1992. Through the 1990s, Horowitz performed more than 200 clubs per year.

Before signing with Sony Music/Okeh Records, Horowitz had released several albums under his own Laughing Bear record label, including It’s Chubby Time, Gas Money and Gas Money. His first major-label album, Booty and the Beast was produced by Tom Dowd (an Atlantic Records engineer and producer who also worked with Ray Charles and Wilson Pickett). Hit the High Hard One, a live recording of him performing, was released by Atlantic Records in 1996. It also included re-releases from his first two albums. Two years later, One Million Broken Guitars appeared on Lightyear Records. Brooklyn Basement Blues followed in 1999.

His current band line up includes Tom Curiano – drums, Paul Loranger – bass, Dave Keyes – keyboards, as well as a recurring cast of musicians.
