Her early education was at Lady Irwin School in Delhi and Delhi Public School, where she received merit-based admission to her high school. After completing an Honours degree in Economics at Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi, she went on to earn an MBA in International Business Management at Maastricht School of Management (Holland) and FORE School of Management Delhi. After marrying Puneet, an Indian-born pharmacist from Belfast, she arrived in the west coast of Scotland. They have two daughters together, one in 2005 and another two years later, in 2007. Poonam was diagnosed with a rare type of bone tuberculosis during her second pregnancy. She spent 18 months in a wheelchair.

Poonam Gupta and her husband Puneet participated in a rickshaw race to raise money for Elephant Family. This charity was established by Mark Shand, the brother of conservationist and Duchess, to save the Asian elephants.

The official headquarters have been moved from the family home in 2015 to the Custom House, Greenock, Scotland.
