Pole was born in Dusseldorf. His name is derived from a Waldorf 4-Pole filter that he dropped and broke in 1996. Although the filter was no longer suitable for DJ work due to its damage, Betke discovered that the filter made strange popping and hissing sounds. The filter was then broken and Betke began to make music with it, which launched his musical career.

Betke’s four first albums, which were titled 1, 2, 3 and R (an intentional trio of albums followed by a collection remixes from Pole’s 1998 debut EP Raum), were all built around this filter. Songs often took the form of dub rhythms and rhythms, with percussion provided through the eponymous filter. Betke broke with this pattern for his 2003 album Pole, which was a mix of tracks from two EPs (“45/45″ and 90/90”) that used more traditional electronic, but still eclectic production.
