He ran for the Banswada seat in 1994 as a TDP candidate. He won with a majority exceeding 57,000 votes. In 2004, he lost against Bajireddy Governorardhan, an INC candidate. He joined the TRS party in March 2011 to support the Telangana Movement. He also resigned his seat as MLA and TDP membership. He then ran for the by-elections that year and was defeated by Sangam Srinivasgoud, INC candidate. On 24 March 2011, he was elected to the Politburo of the TRS.
He was re-elected as a Banswada Assembly member in the 2014 Telangana Assembly Election. On 2 June 2014, he was elected to Cabinet and appointed Agriculture Minister of Telangana.
