Piotr Gontarczyk is one of the most popular and richest Historian who was born on April 29, 1970 in Żyrardów, Poland. Gontarczyk published in 2000 a book titled Pogrom? Zajscia polsko-zydowskie w Przytyku 9 marca 1936 r. Mity, fakty, dokumenty (Pogrom? The Polish-Jewish Events in Przytyk, 9 March 1936: Facts, Myths, and Documents Jerzy Tomaszewski praises Gontarczyk’s efforts to describe the events in detail and his critical approach towards press reports. However, he criticizes him for limiting sourcing to almost exclusively Polish legal and administrative documents. He sees Polish, Jewish, and American publications as based almost exclusively upon the prewar Jewish press, as well books published during the communist period. Tomaszewski claims that this rejection was wrong and irrational, limiting the information available on the subject.

He worked with Judge Krzysztof Kuba, the deputy commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner for Public Interest from 1998 to 2005. He has been vice- director of Office of Archivization of Documents since 2006. He was appointed Deputy Director of Lustration Office at Institute of National Remembrance in September 2007.

In 2006 Gontarczyk identified Zygmunt Bauman (1925–2017) as a former agent, in 1945–53, of the Polish Security Service.

In 2008, Gontarczyk and Sławomir Cenckiewicz published a book, SB a Lech Wałęsa. Przyczynek do biografii (The Polish Security Service and Lech Wałęsa: Contributions toward a Biography). While the book seemed more like a political indictment than a work of scholarship, it caused a major controversy in Poland. Gontarczyk and Cenckiewicz argued that in the 1970s the Solidarity leader and later President of Poland Lech Wałęsa was a secret informant of the Polish communist Security Service. Michael Szporer wrote that the book should have been more nuanced in its judgments of anticommunist leaders, and that it unfairly singled out Wałęsa.Professor Wlodzimierz Suleja named Gontaryczk’s book as one of the most important biographies in recent historiography in Poland

Gontarczyk stated in 2001 that some Jews’ involvement in the communist atrocities of World War II Soviet Poland during World War II cannot be excused for the Jedwabne pogrom of 10 July 1941. Even if this involvement was a contributor to anti-Jewish violence. Gontarczyk criticised Jan T. Gross’ 2001 book Neighbors, The Destruction of the Jedwabne Jewish Community, Poland. This book described the Jedwabne massacre. Gross was criticized by Gontarczyk for not giving equal weight to witness statements on the basis their ethnicity, for displaying a lack in objectivity and for treating witness statements solely on the grounds of whether they were at risk of being a Holocaust victim. Gontarczyk said that this is contrary to established history studies procedure, which requires that every statement be evaluated objectively. Gross also pointed out the inextricable relations between Polish Jews and Poles under Soviet occupation. Gontarczyk attributed responsibility for the Jedwabne Pogrom to Nazism and communism. He also supported exhumation, which was opposed religiously by many Jews.
