After being released by Brentford, Balkestein signed a permanent contract with AFC Wimbledon on 17 July 2012. Balkestein’s first goal for AFC Wimbledon came on 21 August 2012, when he was defeated by Burton Albion 6-2. Balkestein, a 25 -year-old defender, scored his second goal for AFC Wimbledon on 12 March 2013, in a 3-1 victory over Southend United. Balkestein, who had made 24 appearances for “The Dons”, was released by AFC Wimbledon on the 14th of May 2013.

Balkestein’s first loan period was with League One rivals Rochdale, which began on 19 August 2011 in the UK and ran until 18 January 2012. Balkestein made his debut for Rochdale in the 2-0 loss to Oldham Athletic on August 20, 2011. Balkestein would make only 13 league appearances for Rochdale during the 2011-12 season. However, he was plagued by a recurring groin injury that forced him to return home to his parent club in November 2011. On 5 December 2011, the 24-year-old was back at Rochdale training. He did not make another appearance on “The Dale”, and returned to Brentford in January 2012. Uwe Rosler told him that he didn’t have a future at the club. Balkestein joined League Two side AFC Wimbledon as a one-month loan on 9 March 2012. Balkestein made his debut in AFC Wimbledon’s 2-1 win over Dagenham & Redbridge, on 10 March 2012. The defender would make six league appearances for “The Dons”, but his loan period would be ended after an X-Ray revealed that he had fractured his toe during a 4-0 victory over Burton Albion.

Balkestein signed a 2-year contract with Ipswich Town on 16 June 2008. There was also the possibility of an additional year. Balkestein was transferred to Ipswich Town for a fee of PS180,000. This compensation was paid to his ex-club SC Heerenveen. Balkestein made his Football League and professional debut for Ipswich Town in a 2-1 loss to Preston North End on 9 August 2008. Balkestein, a 21-year-old defender, would make 20 league appearances for Ipswich Town in the 2008-09 season. Balkestein was also a part of “The Blues”, playing in the First Round in 2008-09 League Cup against Leyton Orient (4-1), and in the Third Round match against Wigan Athletic (24 September 2008, which ended in a 4-1 loss). Pim Balkestein, who was on loan from Brentford until the end 2009-10, returned to Brentford with the intention of a permanent move. Balkestein’s first goal in the football league for Brentford was scored on 30 March 2010 against Oldham Athletic.
After being released by AFC Wimbledon, Balkestein joined Dutch Eerste Divisie side VVV-Venlo on 12 June 2013, signing a three-year deal.
