Piet Kleine was elected Olympic Champion in the 10,000 m at the 1976 Winter Olympics. He beat Sten Stensen, who held the world record, in a close race. This was a reverse of the roles played by Stensen and Kleine in the Olympic 5,000m, which had been held three days prior. Bronze was won by Hans van Helden, a Dutch-French speed skater who was the world record holder for the 10,000 m and 5,000 meters. Kleine also became the World Allround Champion and broke four world records that year (1976).
Kleine was again a participant in the Winter Olympics at Lake Placid (1980), where he won Olympic silver for the 10,000 m behind Eric Heiden. In 1981, he quit his speed skating career and began a successful career in amateur cycling racing. He was a member the Dutch national team and finished 5th in the World Championships for the 100km team time trial.
