Peter Pakesch is one of the most popular and richest Curator who was born on July 16, 1955 in Graz, Austria. Peter Pakesch was born to the pianist and concert singer Gertrude Kaan (1924-2009) and Dr. Erich Pakesch (1917-1979) on July 16, 1924, as the third of their children.
In 1993, Pakesch ended in 1993 his Gallery at Vienna. In the course of his time as a Galerist he was able to bring Austrian artists like Franz West and Heimo Zobernig into international recognition. The following years Pakesch worked as a freelance curator at the National Gallery in Prague. In 1996, he became the Director of Kunsthalle Basel, where he provided a number of young artists like Olafur Eliasson, Michel Majerus and Pawel Althamer their first Institutional Exhibitions. In his time at Basel Pakesch was also an advocate for the continuous improvement of the Museum’s structures. He also revamped the annual local exhibition into a totally new structure, and was renamed of ‘Regionale is still an important show that spans Mulhouse, Freiburg and Basel. Between 1996 and 1998, Pakesch was a frequent traveler in post-communist countries as an official participant on the Soros International Advisory Board. 1997, he got married to Actress as well as Filmproducer Michaela Leutzendorff (1957) and in March 1998 was born his daughter Josepha Pakesch’s birth.
In 2003 Pakesch left Basel and took over as the director and artistic director of the Universalmuseum Joanneum together with Wolfgang Muchitsch who served as the Executive Director. During his time at the Kunsthaus Graz specifically, Pakesch curated some important exhibitions including Modell Martin Kippenberger (2007), Warhol Wool Newman – Painting and Screening Real Conner Lockhart Warhol (2009), Measuring the World (2011) and Heimo Zobernig (2013).
In September 2015 Pakesch pulled out of his contract with the Universalmuseum Joanneum due to personal reasons. Since then he has been serving as the chairman of the Maria Lassning Foundation. In this function he curated an exhibition about Maria Lassning in collaboration with Paul Schimmel for Hauser & Wirth in Los Angeles and London.
Following returning back to Austria at the end of 1981 Pakesch set out to create his very private Gallery at Vienna. The gallery featured artists like John Baldessari, Herbert Brandl, Ilya Kabakow, Mike Kelly, Martin Kippenberger, Sol LeWitt, Albert Oehlen, Franz West and Heimo Zobernig. In 1986, Pakesch as well as his fellow Austrian culture politician Helmut Strobl founded the Grazer Kunstverein and he was the artistic director from 1988. In this period, he also created the magazine interdisciplinary Durch. Together together with Hubert Klocker, Pakesch organized the project Protect Me from What I Want, which was a collaboration with Jenny Holzer and Keith Haring to promote The Vienna Festival. In the year 1990, Pakesch along with Johannes Schlebrugge founded the Magazine Fama & Fortune Bulletin that is published in irregular intervals. In 2015, the Vienna Museum will be hosting an exhibit on this period called Ballgasse 6, Galerie pakesch and the Kunstszene of the 80er.

Peter Pakesch (*1955 in Graz, Styria) is an Austrian exhibition curator director of museums and foundation director for the Maria Lassnig Foundation.
Pakesch was a student at his time at the Akademisches Gymnasium in Graz from 1965 until 1973 when he completed high school. Then, he began studying architectural studies at Graz University of Technology in addition to working as an artist since the age of. His first encounters were as director at Forum Stadtpark between 1976 and 1979, which he was as a member since. Following a few initiatives that he worked on with Steirischer Herbst and the Organisation of several shows (The Kipper Kids and Reindeer Werk) with a concentration on non-verbal theater. In 1978, Pakesch was the curator of the exhibition Kunst im Schaufenster, in conjunction together with Peter Weibel. In 1980, he moved into New York City for a semester abroad as part the course of study. At this point, Peter Pakesch encountered many people who would be influential for his personal life while also being involved in projects within the realm that included Fashion Moda and the Times Square Show.
Between 2003 and 2008 Pakesch sat on the board of the Graz University of Technology. Since 2010 he has been a member of the Board of Trustees for the IBA Basel 2020.
