Leahy became a lieutenant general and made the Chief of the Army on June 28, 2002. The appointment was extended for another 3 years on June 2005 and he resigned in the Army on July 3, 2008. Leahy is the longest-serving Chief of Army from the time of the time of General Sir Harry Chauvel in the 1920s and is the only Chief of the Army who has not served in an operational capacity in a war zone. Lieutenant-General Peter Francis Leahy AC HonFAIB FRSN (born 30 October 1952) is a former top officer of the Australian Army, whose military career culminated in his appointment as the Army’s Chief of the Army from 2002 to 2008. He was director of the National Security Institute, University of Canberra since October of 2008.
As of 1995 Leahy received the rank of Member of the Order of Australia (AM) In 2002, he was promoted into an Officer (AO). In 2007, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, Leahy was promoted to the rank of Companion (AC). He was acknowledged internationally by the distinction of the United States of America Legion of Merit with the grade of Commander and the Republic of Singapore Meritorious Service Medal (Military) and the Cambodian Royal Order of Sahametrei with the grade of Commander, and the Malaysian Armed Forces Order for Valour with the grade of Colonel Gallant.
Leahy’s early career included instructional duties at the Officer Cadet School, Portsea and command of a company of Gurkha soldiers during an exchange posting with 10th Princess Mary’s Own Gurkha Rifles in Hong Kong. Over a three-year period he was a student and an instructor at the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Later in his career he was the Commanding Officer of the 8th/9th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, Military Assistant to the Chief of the General Staff, Director of Army Research and Analysis, Commander of the 3rd Brigade, Chief of Staff of Headquarters Australian Theatre and Deputy Chief of Army.
