Peter Joseph Boettke (/”‘ b et K i Born on January 3 1960) is an American economist from the Austrian School of Economics. Boettke is currently Professor of Philosophy and Economics in George Mason University; the BB&T Professor of studying the study of Capitalism, Vice President for Research as well as the Director of the F.A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the Mercatus Center at GMU.

Beyond the school, Boettke has pursued a separate career in sports. An ex-high school basketball and college tennis athlete, Boettke first worked as a tennis teacher professional prior to studying for his master’s degree in economics. After graduation He started coaching basketball for youth and eventually became a coach in high schools level and the elite AAU level which allowed him to qualify to compete in the AAU 16U National Championships during 2007. Many of the players he used to coach are now playing for college. He was recognized as a coach in the basketball local Hall of Fame in Northern Virginia.

Following his doctoral thesis, Boettke taught at several institutions which included Oakland University, Manhattan College and New York University. He was a faculty member in 1998 when he was re-admitted back to George Mason University as a faculty member. The year 2004 saw him being appointed as a Hayek Fellow of the London School of Economics. He has also been a Faculty Fellow at the Charles University/Georgetown University American Institute for Political and Economic Studies in Prague and a Visiting Scholar at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford University. Since the year 2011, Boettke has also been appointed an associate to the Philosophy Department at George Mason University and in 2012, he received an honorary Doctorate of Honoris Causa in the Social Science from Universidad Francisco Marroquin.

Analytical Anarchism is the name that was given to the term by Peter Boettke, to the positive economics of anarchism or anarchism from an economic perspective within the libertarian tradition from Murray Rothbard’s For a New Liberty (1973) and David Friedman’s The Machinery of Freedom (1973). Boettke says that anarchism based on analysis was born out of this tradition and is currently being studied by economists like Peter Leeson, Edward Stringham as well as Christopher Coyne. They are all affiliated to Mercatus Center and to the faculty of economics at George Mason University.

Boettke was born in Rahway, New Jersey to Fred and Elinor Boettke and remained in the area until the time he relocated to Pennsylvania to go to Thiel College in Greenville and later Grove City College. At Grove City College that he began to become interested in economics after he enrolled in a class given by Hans Sennholz and there that was where he began to develop his religious beliefs. After earning the requirements for a B.A. (1983) studying economics in Grove City, Boettke attended George Mason University where he obtained an M.A. (1987) as well as an Ph.D. (1989) for economics, with a thesis entitled The political economics of Soviet socialism 1918-1928 under the direction under the direction of Dr. Don Lavoie.

In addition to his academic positions, he is also Vice President for Research at Mercatus Center and Director of the F.A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. Until 2007, Boettke held the position of Director of Graduate Studies for the Ph.D. program in economics at George Mason. He serves as editor of George Mason University’s Review of Austrian Economics and as Vice President of the Mont Pelerin Society for the 2018-2020 term. Boettke previously served as the society’s president from 2016 to 2018.
