Wright is born in the year 1961 in Red Cliffs in the Sunraysia region of Victoria She was the sixth child of seven from Lesley as well as Hugh Wright. She spent a lot of her living in Melbourne after her family relocated to Australia in the year 1968. Wright was a student at Wattle Park High School in Burwood before being transferred into MacRobertson Girls’ School for students who excelled. After graduating from high school, she went on to study law and the arts in University of Melbourne. University of Melbourne, later earning a doctorate from the Department of Environmental Studies in Adelaide.

Wright was first placed to his South Australian Greens Senate ticket for the federal election of 2010. The Greens received an 6.8 percent increase within South Australia, finishing with 13.3 percent of the state Senate vote. Wright was one of eight Green Senators in the upper house at the beginning of July

2011. This included the incumbent South Australian Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young.

On commencing her senate term in July 2011, Wright was assigned the portfolios of Attorney-General, Native Title, Veterans’ Affairs, Social Inclusion, Mental Health and Heritage within the federal Greens. She went on to hold the Attorney-General, Veterans’ Affairs, Mental Health and Schools and Education Portfolios.

On 17 July 2015, Wright announced that she would be resigning from the Senate due to illness in her family. She gave her final speech on 19 August, and resigned on 9 September. Robert Simms was appointed to the casual vacancy by a joint sitting of the Parliament of South Australia on 22 September 2015.

Wright is one of the founding members of the South Australian branch of the Greens (along with her husband Mark Parnell, a state MLC who is generally regarded as to be the founder of the South Australian Greens). According to Wright she delayed her career in politics at that moment (1995) to take care of her children.
