As of September 8, 2008, Sackett became the chief scientist of Australia and was appointed Chief Scientist of Australia on November 8, 2008. In announcing their appointment to the position, Minister of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research Senator Kim Carr said Sackett is “an accomplished cross- disciplinary scientist with a record of academic excellence on three continents … highly respected in the national and international communities of science and technology, both for her research and her proven experience in research management.” When she began her new job at the Office of the Chief Scientist and remained as in the role of adjunct faculty at ANU and continued to supervise students in research. Sackett is the only Chief Scientist to be full-time after the position was reduced to a part-time job in 1996. On February 18, 2011 in a letter to colleagues in the field, Sackett announced her intending to step down from the position of Chief Scientist. She explained her decision based on personal and professional reasons.

She was interested in science from a very young age, and her original inclination was towards biology and medicine. While initially unenthusiastic about physics, Sackett developed a passion for the discipline through being mentored by her high school physics teacher.

In 2002 onwards, Sackett became the Director of the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (a part of ANU) for five years, before stepping down to concentrate on mentorship and research. In her position as director Sackett is responsible for administration of Mount Stromlo Observatory in Canberra as well as Siding Spring Observatory in Coonabarabran, New South Wales. Director of the Mount Stromlo observatory, she was in charge of its reconstruction following the 2003 Canberra bushfires. The work of reconstruction was difficult due to disputes with insurers, and was further complicated by the historic status of the observatory, which required an approval from the Australian Heritage Commission to approve every work.
