Pekka Himanen was a philosopher (and computing science for a secondary) in the University of Helsinki, under the supervision of professor Esa Saarinen. In 1994, in conjunction with his dissertation in the field of philosophy and religion The challenges to Bertrand Russell, he received his Ph.D. in philosophy at the same institution, breaking records as the youngest person to earn an PhD in Finland after other record-breaking young PhDs , supervised by Saarinen.
He has conducted research on research projects in Finland (University of Helsinki) and in the United Kingdom, and the United States (Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley). In UC Berkeley, Himanen directed the Berkeley Center for the Information Society Research Group within the Berkeley’s International Computer Science Institute. The Center was operational between September 2002 and 2005 .
Himanen had multiple appointments as a fixed-term part-time professor at Helsinki School of Art and Design (now part of Aalto University as Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture) from 2008 until 2014.
