Bennett grew up in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Bennett graduated in 1980 from Mound Westonka High School in Mound, Minnesota. She went to Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota, graduating in 1980 with the degree of a B.A. in Education. She then attended St. Cloud State University, graduating in 1981 with an M.A. in Special Education. Bennett received her first teaching position as a special educator in Albert Lea in 1981. The third school year she taught was at Wells after a series of cuts.
